Affiliate Marketing: A Simple Guide to Getting Started
Affiliate marketing can be one of the simplest ways to start building an income online because you don’t need to create your own product, handle inventory or deal with customer fulfilment. But simple doesn’t mean easy. This guide explains how affiliate marketing actually works, how affiliates make money and what you need to understand before getting started.
What Is Affiliate Marketing?
Affiliate marketing is a business model where you recommend another company’s product or service and receive a commission when someone makes a qualifying purchase through your referral.
Instead of creating a product yourself, your job is to connect the right people with products or services that can genuinely help them.
That might happen through a website, YouTube channel, Facebook page, email list, social media, paid advertising or other forms of content.
The basic process
Find an offer
Choose a product or service with an affiliate program.
Get people interested
Create useful content that helps people understand the problem and possible solutions
Earn a commission
If someone purchases through your qualifying referral, the company pays you according to its affiliate terms.
You Don't Need to Create a Product
One of the attractions of affiliate marketing is that you don’t have to manufacture a product, keep stock at home or build a fulfilment system.
The company you’re promoting generally handles the product, payment processing, delivery and customer fulfilment. Your role is to attract attention, educate your audience and make relevant recommendations.
No Inventory
You don’t have to buy products and store them yourself.
No Product Creation
You can promote existing products and services.
Focus on Marketing
Your main job is connecting people with useful solutions.
Affiliate Marketing Isn't Free Money
You’ll see plenty of people online suggesting that affiliate marketing is an easy way to make money quickly.Â
That’s not the way I look at it.
The difficult part isn’t getting an affiliate link.Â
The difficult part is getting the right people to trust you enough to click it—and ultimately buy something.
That means learning how to create useful content, understand your audience, communicate clearly and consistently bring the right people to your offers.
Trust comes before the commission.
If your only goal is to get somebody to click your affiliate link, you’re thinking too short-term. Build trust first. Make the recommendation second.
How AI Can Help With Affiliate Marketing
Artificial intelligence can dramatically speed up many parts of affiliate marketing, but it doesn’t replace the need for good judgement.
I use AI to help with research, brainstorming, content ideas, outlines, headlines, images, emails and other repetitive tasks.
The important part is using AI as a tool—not simply publishing whatever it produces.
Research
Use AI to explore topics, questions and content ideas.
Content
Turn ideas into articles, emails, videos and social content.
Optimization
Analyse headlines, structure, readability and possible improvements.
Affiliate Programs Worth Exploring
There are thousands of affiliate programs available, but not all of them are worth your time. I’m interested in programs where the product, business model and earning opportunity make sense—not simply the size of the commission.
LiveGood
LiveGood is one affiliate opportunity I currently recommend and explain on JoinNev. The company offers a membership program with access to member pricing on its products, while affiliates can also participate in its compensation plan.
LiveGood currently describes its membership as $9.95 monthly or $99.95 annually, with affiliates able to participate in its compensation plan.
